GAMEX 2020 TOURNAMENT REPORT The Exmouth Game Fishing Club’s GAMEX game fishing tournament is Western Australia’s largest and most prestigious fishing event, showcasing Exmouth’s extraordinarily diverse fishing options via 27 different prize categories across line class, tag and release and capture sections for more than 40 point scoring gamefish species.
Held in March each year, the 52nd running of GAMEX from March 13-21, 2020 saw 47 boats and 199 anglers entered. With a favourable forecast and some good billfish reports in the weeks leading up to the event, things were looking positive for GAMEX 2020; right up until the start date when the threat of the COVID-19 virus pandemic quickly escalated. The tournament was under real threat of a devastating last minute cancellation, but luckily was just able to proceed as planned with additional mitigation measures brought in. As things turned out, GAMEX would be one of the last tournaments to be held in the country before travel restrictions and social distancing measures forced the cancellation of group gatherings for fishing events.
As GAMEX 2020 kicked off with the first day of fishing on Sunday, March 15, most of the field took advantage of the calm conditions to chase billfish. Small to middling black marlin in the 20-80kg class were available in decent numbers and made up most of the tag & release catch, along with quite a few big sailfish which were mixed in with the blacks on the inshore grounds. Further offshore the last of Exmouth’s summer run of blue marlin temped a few crews to head out wide looking for a monster.
As the week progressed, the billfishing remained consistent if unspectacular by Exmouth’s world-beating standards, with the fleet amassing a total tag & release catch of 255 billfish which was made up of 168 black marlin, 78 sailfish, 8 blue marlin and 1 striped marlin. Throughout the tournament most teams targeting the billfish sections were averaging around three bites per day, although best single day stats for the tournament came from Blue Horizon who after a slow start staged a big push for champion team honors on day four raising 11, hooking 9 and tagging 7 billfish which was made up of 5 black marlin and 2 sailfish. Unfortunately, engine problems the following day cost the team half a day’s fishing and put paid to their chances.
By the last of the six days of fishing, at least a dozen teams had a shot at taking out the win in almost any of the 11 different billfish sections. The Champion Boat Tag & Release Marlin section eventually went to Azura with 9 tags from runner-up The Wench who tagged 10 fish but lost out on points due to fishing heavier line classes. The Wench did pick up Champion Boat 7m & Under Tag & Release Billfish, while On Strike II rounded out most of the other major billfish sections winning Champion Boat Over 7m Tag & Release Billfish, Champion Boat Tag & Release Sailfish and the George King Memorial Trophy for Top Tagging Captain with their 15 sailfish and 7 black marlin.
Special mention must also go to four year old Alex Cottrell who, with the help of his dad Adam, was among 28 anglers to tag their first billfish during GAMEX 2020, catching an 8kg sailfish on just 4kg line. Fair to say young Alex was a crowd favorite receiving his runner-up award behind Lachlan Turrell in the Champion Small Fry Angler Tag & Release Billfish section at the presentation night.
In the line class capture sections, things were a bit more difficult with the ever-worsening problem of shark depredation making point score on the lighter line classes nearly impossible at most locations. Nevertheless, a good range of species and some excellent captures made it to the weigh station, with dolphinfish, wahoo, cobia, Spanish mackerel, shark mackerel, golden trevally, bludger trevally, queenfish, spangled emperor, striped tuna, mack tuna, yellowfin tuna and bigeye tuna weighed in.
One world, six national and six state record claims were lodged during the event. Matt Gates on Pussee Galore was the world record claimant, weighing in a 10.2kg golden trevally on 2kg line. On that same day and out of the same school, crewmate Mick Grasso managed a 9.65kg golden on 3kg line that missed that line class record by just 15 grams!
Overall winners were Small Fry Lachlan Turrell on Sea Trix with captures on 7 line classes across 5 species, Junior Jesse Sutton on Got ‘Im On with captures on 10 different line classes across 9 species, Female Anna Passmore on Pullin’ Skirt with captures on 11 different line classes across 7 species and Male Matt Arscott on Awesum with captures on 10 different line classes across 9 species.
Champion Boat Overall Capture/Tag & Release was with just a handful of points separating the top four boats going into the last day of fishing. The overall win went to Pullin’ Skirt with 7 species on 11 line classes for a total of 6480 points, ahead of Awesum with 9 species on 10 line classes and 6351 points. Junior angler, Jesse Sutton was awarded the Phil Tickle Memorial Trophy for the tournament’s Most Meritorious Capture (highest point score capture excluding billfish or shark) for her 6.2kg cobia on 1kg line.
